These filters hold gases, liquids, or powders in close proximity; one millionth of an inch (one mil) may easily remove a portion of the gas from the stream. If a gas or powder must be filtered that is too fine or abrasive, then this size may be considered too fine or too large to reliably remove the contaminant; one thousandth of an inch from the flow path may remove a significant portion of the load. Unless the flow path is fairly straight, slight secondary flows may be expelled before the full vacuum condition is reached. This characteristic can also act as a pressure or vacuum relief valve for diaphragm or trap doors. The increased surface area and vacuum loading of this material prematurely removes particulates in the form of dust or fumes. However, the increased surface area and vacuum loading may cause particulates to leak out of the pores in the pores, possibly contaminating the fluid being filtered.
