Wheatons SNP rubber stoppers are designed to fit a wide range of plastic bottles and flasks with ground joint seals. Snail-type stoppers close by means of an exothermic reaction whereby the snafu is broken by the action of the sample being introduced into the stoper. The higher the number of punctures, the greater the leakage current, making it impossible for liquids to pass through. Rubber stoppers exhibit a barrier to non-contact cooling that is independent of the pressure applied to the bottle. The exception is the thin-walled variety used in pharmaceutical formulations for which there is a distinct lack of gap between the stopper and the bottle neck. The higher the gap, the greater the leakage current. The major advantage of this design over previously used stopper styles is that it absorbs less liquid while setting a higher tension in the bottle neck. Most stoppers achieve this result by placing the force on the dispensing bottle neck. The dispensing bottle must be sanitized afterward with similar stoppers containing active antiseptics.
