Blackhawk uses premium vegetable-tanned Italian cowhide leather in the BlackHawk GripBreak Colt 1911 Holster, with a natural finish from a plant-based "tannin" compound used for the tanning process. The leather is then drum dyed: placed in a huge barrel-shaped drum and tumbled with the dye for 24 to 48 hours. This forces the dye into the leather for long-lasting results. Blackhawk holsters are contour stitched; the holsters are built by closely stitching along the outline of the pistol. Not only does this result in a better fit and appearance, but it's one of the telling marks of a well-made leather holster. Blackhawk holsters are still hand-boned. Leather holsters were traditionally shaped to a particular pistol with a small animal bone. Modern metal or plastic tools have replaced bones, but the term - and the technique - is still used, giving Blackhawk holsters a sculpted outline.
