Meales's Review of Leupold LTO Tracker Thermal Imaging Monocular

WHAT I LIKE:
1. Sleek, light, nice control layout
2. Very sensitive
3. Uses standard CR123 battery not a proprietary battery
4. Gets 10 hr on a single battery
WHAT I DON'T LIKE:
1. This is NOT a monocular. It is a direct view, tiny 1.2" display with no provisions for adjustable focus. A monocular would have an eyepiece that would allow placing it next to the eye with an adjustable focus. Those of us over 40 yrs old will have to view this at arms length or with cheaters. The monocular eyepiece setup used by competitors fixes this problem. This is the most annoying feature of the unit. I have fixed the problem myself by mounting an eyepiece on a flip-up lens cap. This way I can magnify the screen while holding it to my eye like a binocular/monocular or flip it up out of the way to view the screen with my glasses (about 12" away from my eye).
2. The unit ships with no lens caps. C'mon guys . . . for $15 you can put flip-up covers on the unit. I would think for the cost, this little safety feature would gave been included. For those of you wanting covers, you can go to Amazon and buy the Vortex FC-5 (40 - 46mm) to cover the viewing end and a Butler Creek Flip-Open Objective Scope Cover, Size 03 (1.34-Inch, 34mm) to cover the detector end. They fit very well and should prevent inadvertent damage to the optics.
3. There is no brightness adjustment. If you're using it at night, you'll likely want to use the red palette. I did find the the black hot had the best definition but is very bright at night and totally destroys your night vision in that eye.
4. The screen resolution sucks! Competitively priced units have 3X the resolution (640X420). The 6X zoom is digital, not optical, so the unit just magnifies the already poor resolution evident at 1X. I do not believe the detection claim of 600 yds. Maybe if you're looking at a campfire you'll see the heat blob! Coyotes at 200 yds were NOT visible, not even a trace (they were visible with Gen III NVG and an infra red illuminator) even though we could hear them clearly. Perhaps this was due to the temperatures at the time. I'll give it more time before I make up my mind on this aspect of the unit.
THE SHORT ANSWER: All in all I like the unit and I think it will live up to its billing as a game recovery unit. It's a little pricey, but the standard battery is very important to me. If you're looking for a monocular, similar to some competitors, you may be disappointed. I would recommend the unit knowing that it has some limitations . . . you're not going to get a thermal rifle scope. In spite of the foregoing, I recommend the LTO.
Would Recommend: Yes
