When Was 22 Magnum Ammo Developed?

The round was introduced by Winchester Ammunition in 1960 to give a little variety to rimfire cartridges. On paper, a 22 Win Mag round with a 40-grain bullet has a muzzle velocity of 1,910 feet-per-second and 324 foot-pounds of energy. When compared to .22LR, that's a difference of about 600 fps and more than 170 ft-lbs. This is why 22 magnum ammo is especially useful for hunting, as it helps you deliver a quick, clean kill to varmints and other small to medium-sized game.

Is 22 Magnum and 22 WMR the Same?

Yes, these are two different names for the same type of ammo. Since Winchester originally developed the bullet, they named it 22 WMR, which stands for Winchester Magnum Rimfire. Over time, people have started to abbreviate this to just 22 magnum ammo or 22 mag ammo, but all of these names refer to the same cartridge.
