The .44 Special or .44 S&W Special is a smokeless powder center fire metallic cartridge developed by Smith & Wesson in 1907 as the standard chambering for their New Century revolver, introduced in 1908. Many factory ammunition loadings are currently available in .44 Special, including bullet weights of 135, 165, 180, 200, 240, 246, and 250 grains (16 g) at various velocity levels.
Handgun hunters like .44 Special ammo for hunting deer, wild hogs, and even brown bears! .44 Special has a muzzle velocity of around 800 to 900 feet per second and about 300 foot-pounds of energy.
