Very Accurate Powder Drops and Some Quick Tips

Written on Feb 13, 2018

I'll be blunt. You can pay 5 times as much money for a quality powder measure and you still won't get one that drops more accurately whether you are using spherical, flake, or extruded powders. The more expensive powder measure should last longer than the Auto-Drum, but for this price, I can afford to replace it if necessary.

Unique Features: The hopper can be shut off and removed from the powder measure for emptying. You can buy extra drums and leave each one set for a specific caliber. You just swap the drum when you want to change a caliber. How much more simple can it get? One last feature avoided in the instructions: It's case activated; so you don't need the safety disconnector or the bead chain. You also don't need a spring or rod to activate it for your progressive press. Just check YouTube for the instructions on how to accomplish this.

If you want a great experience from the start, the Lee Auto-Drum needs pre-conditioned or you have to run a full hopper of powder through it. Trust me. It's quicker to pre-condition it. Simply remove the drum (cone) and spray dry graphite on the cone and on the mating surface in the housing. I would wash the hopper with dish soap and allow to dry without rinsing it off. Don't rinse the soapy solution off. This will reduce static in the hopper if you are in very dry conditions.

The other thing is to make sure the drum is tightly secured without stripping the threads in the drum, but it must be tight. The threads in the drum are nyl

Worked Well With Some Modification

Written on Apr 18, 2017

Worked well with some modification. I purchased two of these for my Vortex VMX-3T magnifier. The cup portion was too deep -- particularly on the front of the magnifier where it came very close to my Vortex Strikefire 2. With a careful cut of the rubber cup with scissors they fit perfectly. The fit is also snug,so I don't have to worry about them slipping off.

Howard Leight Impact Pro Ear Muff NRR 30

Written on Jun 10, 2016

Not much to say other than for the money these are excellent. Shooting with a rifle, however, is problematic as the muffs are too thick for a proper cheek weld, but for shooting handguns and yet being able to hear conversation and range commands I these are wonderful.

Caldwell Ultimate Target Stand

Written on Feb 15, 2016

Your targets will be lower to the ground, but perfectly appropriate for .22 LR plinking. You certainly can use it for higher caliber weapons, but I wouldn't suggest letting novices do so unless you want your stand shot apart. That said, the product is under $20. It can be easily replaced. The product is a very versatile stand and is easily setup and disassembled. Placing a 2x4 board between two stands allows for great fun shooting cans, bottles, etc. A novice is also less likely to shoot the stands, if you place the targets appropriately. I highly recommend this product.

Vortex VMX-3T Magnifier with Flip Mount

Written on Jan 05, 2016

Lifetime warranty. Should work well with many optics. Only two cons: 1. When the Magnifier is flipped out of the way, it obstructs you field of view with both eyes open. To correct you must rotate the mount, but this then moves the release button to the front, which is a little awkward initially. 2. Eye Relief is only 2.2 inches.

Howard Leight Quiet Band Ear Plugs Are Convenient

Written on Oct 27, 2015

Depending on use these may not offer the ultimate in hearing protection, but for most uses they are wonderful. Lawn mowing, power tools, shooting sports, are but a few applications, these ear plugs can be used for. The optimal word for me in describing these is "convenient". They stay around your neck until ready for use and then inserting them requires minimal insertion effort for a snug fit. The only negative is that through normal movement, one may need to re-seat them from time to time. One positive is if someone approaches you for conversation, removal and reinsertion are easy and they can lay around your neck.

If you need 31+ dB protection, these obviously won't do, but I would feel comfortable using these while shooting most handgun and rifle calibers. I would not recommend them for AR-15's, shotguns, etc. other than for very brief periods. That said, I use them for everything else.
