Every bit as good as a fat boy

Written on Dec 04, 2025

I bought a fat boy tripod head last year when I was in Montana shoot pdogs and found that while it’s a fantastic head for shooting it did not work perfectly with the tripod (Slik) I was using. It required a tripod that uses a removable rotating base like the one fat boy sells. My buddy who also bought a fat boy tripod head has more money than I bought the fat boy tripod so I was able to see how the components functions as a system. The fat boy is a fantastic, robust and massive tripod, but very expensive. I decided to look around to see if I could find something equivalent but at a lower cost. I came across the Leofoto SO-362X and by matching specifications of the fat boy and leofoto I realized they are virtually identical yet the leofoto was listed at over $100 cheaper. Optics Planet was also offering $80 off of a $500 + purchase so that sweetened the deal. The Leofoto is also a massive and robust tripod that has all the features of the fat boy plus it came with a bowl base for use with large video heads like I use on my Swarovski BTX spotting scope. All in all I am overjoyed with this purchase as it matches or surpasses all my requirements and expectations for quality and affordability.
