Reviews & Ratings for Cold Steel Trail Boss Axe, Hickory Handle 90TA
— 5 reviews — Page 1
Performs with axes that cost five times as much. Sharpens well. They could give a little more regard to grain orientation in their handles and develop a decent sheath. But for the money the trail boss is the low-cost boss!

This axe has served as a great little pioneering tool for me since 2015. It’s lightweight, affordable and punches way above its weight despite it’s small size. It handles easily and despite some hard use I’ve put it through, the steel has held up great.
For a sub-$50 axe, this is easily one of the best on the market, and has been for a while. Bravo, Cold Steel!
Pros:
light weight
Quality
Durable (good luck breaking it)
functioal
afforable
Cons:
Lead time for delivery
Best Used for:
Emergency preparedness
Camping and hunting trips
Pioneering

I was looking for a longer handled "boys axe" or camping axe, preferably not made in China. Many of the European and "American" brands had mixed reviews or weren't made here, so I was willing to try others. Cold Steel released this model last year, and with the only negatives I read being handle grain, I bought 2. Turned ou to be a great choice! The head is Taiwanese and the handle American hickory, with near 100% grain alignment. It sharpened easily and seems to hold an edge pretty well over the little use I've been able to give it so far.
Very impressed for a +/-$34 axe.
Pros:
Quality & Affordable
Cons:
None
Best Used for:
Camping and survival

I cannot believe how good this cheap little Chinese axe is. I own Gransfors, Hultafors, vintage Plumb, Norlund, etc and this is by far the most used in my wood shed. I use it every day during winter months, for the last 2 years now. Stays sharp, great grain structure in the handle, has stayed tight even with abuse such as twisting and pounding. I have no idea why or how a $25 axe works this well, but I purchased a second one as a spare.
