Solid Bullets....Literally

by Adam, from TX, United States Written on February 16, 2024
Dangerous game solids have a relatively easy job: strike a target with sufficient force to penetrate deep and then hold together. A number of dangerous game solids have failed at that over the years, including prior versions of this bullet. The DGS since the early 2000s has been excellent, and has a steel jacket sufficiently thick to render it comparable to a brass or copper monolithic in terms of deformation. This matters a great deal for the .458 WM, where the lower density of copper or brass seriously impacts powder capacity in an already short case. Be advised that the cannelure on this bullet will set a COAL o just over 3.1" in a .458 WM, though in a Mauser action that's magazine length regardless.
Pros:
  • Best DG option for the .458 WM
Cons:
  • Cannelure location reduces theoretical 3.34" COAL; in practice irrelevant
Best Used for:
  • Dangerous game

Big Thumpers

by Waveform, from AZ, United States Written on July 18, 2020
I wanted to load up some heavy bullets for 45-70 per the Hornady manual and these did not disappoint. Hornady quality was as expected. Very happy with these and would recommend. Might not shoot a steady diet of them but for every once in a while it stretches the capabilities of the Ruger No.1.
