Like the rest of the telescopes in Celestron's line, the CGX-L 1400 HD is loaded with high-performance features essential for astrophotography and astro-photography. The unique features of this fully computerized equatorial mount include a smaller base profile with a longer saddle that was made specifically for our larger optical tubes. As a result, this telescope requires a much lower base profile than any of the other fully computerized equatorial mounts in the line. The CGX-L is fast, smooth, and highly accurate, making it an excellent choice for astrophotography and astro-photography. But the improvements don't stop there. The mount has received a number of other upgrades that take it from good to excellent! Most notably, the worm gears were moved from the rear of the mount to the front, improving tracking performance and increasing stability. Also note that the mount was moved to the front so the counterweight can be cranked from the rear without having to move the scope from the front. Another key feature is the SmartShield, which uses a light-weight sensor to protect the sensors from damage while in the field. With this new sensor, the scope's backplate no longer contacts the telescope optical mount's backplate but instead locates it on its own. This provides imagers with a much larger working surface on which to attach their equipment. The ion-mass damper is built into the mount, further reducing the already substantial damping of the mount. A heavy-duty counterweight is included to support the larger optical tubes. Celestron's exclusive ion-shield technology protects the rear of the optical tube from damage without losing its strength. Even though the worm gears are larger, the worm wheels on the Celestron CGX-L 1400 HD Telescope use 144mm diameter worm wheels, making these telescopes smoother than ever.
