What Are the Types of Game Calls?

The two main types of game call devices include hand-held game calls and electronic game calls. And, the four types of game calls include position calls, distress calls, aggression calls, and mating calls.

Game Call Devices

Hand-held game calls vary by design. To use most of them, though, you just blow into it like a reed on a musical instrument. However, you may need to practice using a hand-held game call and develop techniques to adequately convey the sound of the animal you're hunting. The benefit to a hand-held game call is that they're compact and affordable. They're usually made out of plastic or wood.

An electronic game call is essentially a portable speaker equipped with pre-recorded animal noises. Using an electronic game call, you can program the device to function for your needs by controlling variables like volume, patterns, and frequency. They're easy to use, but cost more and are larger than hand-held devices.

Types of Game Calls

The type of game call you use largely depends on what you're hunting and how you're hunting it.

A position signals to other animals, often of the same species, their location. This gives the animal a sense of safety. A distress call suggests that an animal is hurt. It's meant to encourage other animals like foxes, coyotes, bobcats, or other predators to step out from hiding to take advantage of the wounded creature. An aggression call signals that an aggressive bull is on his way, so other animals should get out of the way. It encourages them, especially big game, to run or stand their ground. And, a mating call is meant to invite animals of a certain species toward the hunter. It's signaling that the caller is interested in mating.

What Is the Most Popular Turkey Call?

For turkey hunting, some of the most popular turkey calls include box calls, diaphragm calls, and push pin calls.

A box call mimics the vocals of a turkey. A turkey box call is a simple design in that it relies on two pieces of wood rubbing against each other to create the sound. It's a type of friction call. You just move a paddle with your finger.

A diaphragm call fits inside your mouth, so it's also called a mouth call. While small and inexpensive, it also takes quite a bit of skill to use. You use it by pressing your tongue against the rubber lining and the roof of your mouth and blowing.

And, a push-and-pull call is a simple and intuitive device. Similar to a box call, you use it by pushing the pin in the box. It creates sound by dragging another piece of wood against the side.

What Are Predator Calls?

Many hunters find success using hand-held calls and many other hunters with electronic game calls. While it's up to the preference of the hunter, an electronic predator call does offer some advantages.

Predators like coyotes have strong senses and keen wits about them, so a hunter may use an electronic predator call for a strategic advantage. The hunter can just place the predator call in a location so the animal cannot see or smell him. As the predator nears the game call, the animal walks within the sights and range of the hunter.

How Do You Use a FoxPro Game Call?

FoxPro is a brand of game calls mostly known for their electronic game calls, but they offer other game calls as well. For many of their designs, FoxPro combines decoys with the game call. The company's offerings include predators, whitetails, elk, turkey, and more. Plus, the company offers an additional library of downloadable sounds.

A typical FoxPro game call consists of a portable speaker and remote. You position the speaker (with or without a decoy) in a location where you want to attract game and then play animal noises by remote. In a nutshell, that's how you use a FoxPro game call. Specific settings and techniques may vary by model.
