Is It OK to Store a Gun in a Hard Case?

If you don’t have a gun safe or gun cabinet, you can briefly store your firearm in a hard-sided case. Just keep in mind that the foam interior or foam inserts will retain moisture and can cause rust over time, so it is best to not rely on it for long-term storage. The ideal way to handle this is to prep your hard gun case and maintain your firearm:

  1. If possible, remove the foam interior and/or foam inserts and let them dry completely over 24-72 hours before long-term storage. If the foam is not removable, leave the gun case open for the drying period.
  2. Thoroughly clean and oil your firearm before storage in a gun case.
  3. Store with desiccant or another form of dehumidifier inside the gun case whenever possible. You can find these in our Gun Safe Accessories section.
  4. Check and oil the firearm at least once a month and carefully inspect it for any signs of rust. Immediately clean and remove any rust you find, no matter how small. If you find any rust, repeat the gun case drying process.

Will a Gun Rust in a Hard Case?

Yes, if you do not follow the steps above, a gun can and will rust in a Hard Gun Case. This is especially true after trips where they may be exposed to moisture like in humid environments.
