The Vietnam era Boonie hats were very popular as they provided a good amount of coverage from the sun and sand and were very lightweight allowing the soldier to lug around a lighter hat than would otherwise be possible. These Vietnam era Boonies were often used in conjunction with long-string boonies or ponchos to provide additional warmth in the field or on campaign. The GI Boonie hats were often used in conjunction with long bomber type hats to provide a better field of vision and were often used as a substitute for the kep shell hats that bug us to death or to provide a better look. This Vietnam era Boonie hat is made of 6-7/8" cotton wind resistant poplin rip-stop and is Quarpel treated.
