No, .223 Remington and 5.56x45mm NATO ammo are not the same. They look pretty much identical, but there are key differences in both the ammo and the firearms they're chambered for. 223 Remington ammo doesn't have as much pressure as 5.56 NATO, and the rifle chambers have different leade lengths and angles. What this boils down to is that you CAN fire 223 Remington through a firearm chambered in 5.56mm NATO, because it has lower pressure. However, you should NEVER fire 5.56 NATO through a firearm chambered in 223 Rem. The barrel of your firearm should be clearly marked with which caliber it's chambered for.
