The upper has a specialized extension and barrel nut which works with enhanced compatible handguards. The handguard is much easier to install and get/keep straight. I believe it also provides additional heat sinking for the barrel at it's hottest point versus a standard barrel nut design. Just google some pics of "Aero Enhanced Barrel Nut" and "Aero Enhanced Upper" to see the difference. The compatibility with the Atlas handguards makes it worth it for an "enhanced" upper. The Aero Lower Enhanced Receivers have a number of features that make them better than standard.

The main difference between our Enhanced Uppers vs our threaded uppers is the handguard attachment system. The Enhanced Upper is a single forged piece that directly attaches to the handguard and is secured by 8 Torx T15 screws. Traditionally you would secure the handguard to the barrel nut once you have installed the barrel onto the upper. The direct interface to the upper increases rigidity, eliminates the need for barrel nut timing and make maintenance a breeze. This upper is only useable with our M5 Enhanced Handguards which have a large internal diameter allowing you to "tuck" or "sink" up to a 1.5" suppressor inside.

The enhanced designation relates to the way the handguard mounts to the upper receiver. An aero enhanced upper receiver is only compatible with an aero precision handguard.

The barrel nut/ handguard mounting system is different. The handguard mounting system is forged into the reciever. Barrel nut is smaller to dissipate heat.

Aero precision has designated their "enchanced" uppers to distinguish them from standard stripped upper receivers. The enhanced means it comes with a proprietary barrel nut and it wont accept every handguard out there. However, when combined with Aero's "enhanced" handguard of the same platform it seriously reduces the labor and difficulty of installing a handguard. Plus I personally like the enhanced handguard look. Be aware that if you dont want to use aero precision's handguard then a regular stripped upper is likely what you should get.
