The upper has a specialized extension and barrel nut which works with enhanced compatible handguards. The handguard is much easier to install and get/keep straight. I believe it also provides additional heat sinking for the barrel at it's hottest point versus a standard barrel nut design. Just google some pics of "Aero Enhanced Barrel Nut" and "Aero Enhanced Upper" to see the difference. The compatibility with the Atlas handguards makes it worth it for an "enhanced" upper. The Aero Lower Enhanced Receivers have a number of features that make them better than standard.

Fit and finish is perfect on the FDE cerakote M5E1 upper. Mated perfectly with the M5E1 hand guard. Looks good too. Would definitely recommend this upper if used with M5E1 hand guard.

This will be my second build with the aero precision M5 platform, and my 4 aero rifle build, i could not be more impressed with the fit and finish of these enhanced uppers. i only wish they had a larger selection of handguards!
An excellent quality upper receiver, and delivery was incredibly fast. Item was completely free of blemishes and damage. Being put on a Aero M5E1 lower, chambered in 308, 18" barrel, intended to be a pseudo SASS rifle.
This is not my first Aero M5. The newest one I just got is machined improperly and will not accept a charging handle in it. Fair warning to everybody, they normally build good stuff, but obviously this is some sort of an error. Still waiting on Optic...

Product Info for Aero Precision M5E1 .308 Enhanced Upper Receiver
Our state of the art M5E1 platform starts here, with the M5E1 Upper Receiver. The M5E1 upper receiver is a one-piece design combining the handguard mounting platform with the upper itself. Through superior engineering, we have condensed the parts needed to mount a free-floated handguard to a mere 8 screws. Since the handguard mounting surface and upper are of the same forging, not only is it a stronger system, but we are able to make additional lightening cuts to save weight and allow for more efficient cooling.
Ease of installation - Simply insert your barrel assembly into the M5E1 upper, tighten it using the included barrel nut and slide your rail on and tighten the rail screws. Within minutes you have a modular, free-floated rail.
