If you use a magnifier or night vision goggles the adjustment on the high battery compartment on the M4 will be easier to use and access. The M4s has the advantage of having a less obstructed view above the optic.
I know this is an old post but want to inform prospective buyers. The low battery location is to minimize visual obstruction when carrying the rifle at the ready in either the high or medium ready position. The S model is what was/is issued to high speed Army units specializing in MOUT operations. You’d see these coupled on Colt Commando model M4s with a PEQ2 or PAC4 laser beamers mounted to the non-free floating handrail. This item is the real deal and capable of withstanding more abuse than you’d be willing to throw at it or whatever you physically throw it against.
