I cannot see exactly what this unit is. Is it an actual laser beam, and if so is it visible during bright daylight or is it simply a Red Dot type

This is a red laser that fits on the trigger guard of the Ruger LCP II pistol. It emits a visible red laser that is easily seen at the distances you would be using a small caliber 380 defensive pistol. All visible lasers are limited to 5mW output by the US government for civilian usage.

Like every other red laser, you will be able to see the laser/dot on whatever you are aiming at, but you will not normally be able to see the actual beam of the laser unless there is particulate in the air (i.e. smoke or dust).

Will this work on a Ruger LCP Max? Will this activate when it is in the holster?

The AimShot Ultralight Laser is compatible with the Ruger LCP II and LCP Max. It will not activate in a holster as long as the holster is designed to accommodate this laser.
