You have to take the grip completely off.

To be clear, you should never intend to have your rifle improperly setup with the hopes of swapping the grip back after a situation arises.

If you use your rifle in self defense, you will be prosecuted for it being an felonious “Assault Weapon” in CA and face prison time. Witnesses, video, maybe you’re injured in the fight... You won’t be able to change anything after the fact.

Find your favorite CA legal grip and train with it. That’s my advice. I understand the sentiment of those who will not comply with unconstitutional laws, but that won’t keep them out of jail.

Now if you’re going to visit family in another state, then you can change the grip once you’re there (I think, I’m not a lawyer). In that case I would rather just put on Magpul grip or something. Best of luck!

Yes, it has to be completely removed. The backstrap slides onto the grip from the top.
