These have generation 3 image intensifier tubes. They can operate passively (i.e. no supplemental IR light) under most conditions. Inside enclosed buildings with no light or an extremely low level of light you will need to use the built in IR illuminator or another active IR light source.

It is active is you have the IR illuminator turned on. It is passive if you dont. There are three setting on the switch.
