Gen 3 with good specs at a Gen 2 price
Written on Aug 17, 2021
My title pretty much sums it up. If you know about night vision then you know these prices are a steal. If you don't know about night vision...Gen 3 is the best generation that you can get, and the tubes in these units perform well among Gen 3 tubes. There are better tubes out there, but they will cost 2-3x the price.
What does this mean in practice? Having just received mine I've only been able to test it under half moon conditions, under starlight, and inside a building with nothing but starlight and a bit of light pollution coming through a single car sized door. The views under moonlight or starlight are bright, detailed, and breathtaking. You see everything, and you can walk, manuever, and identify objects with ease. In the building test, towards the back of the building my Nyx-14 struggled as any night vision unit would. But it still formed a usable, if dim and noisy, image. There was only one corner, blocked off by boxes, where the image intensifier tube could not form an image. Note that this is all without using the built in IR illuminator.
My only negative comment about the image quality is that the gain seems to be set too high. The tube is very bright and there's more scintillation than I expected. Contrary to the listing, these Gen 3 units do not have a manual gain adjustment. It's better to have too much gain than too little, and you can buy eyepiece filters which pull down the brightness and scintillation. So I consider this a minor complaint, especially for
