is this closed on the bottom half to also somewhat serve as a compensator? — 1 Answer

Part of what makes this an "A2" flash hider is that it will be closed on the bottom. That was done to lessen the amount of dust and debris stirred up from the ground when shooting from the prone position. The "A1" flash hider has slits all the way around.
