Yes, blade closes completely. It is spring activated

On both extension and retraction of the blade, pushing the slide/button tensions the spring. The blade is then released at the limit of slide/button travel. The mechanism acts to lock the blade when extended or retracted so it can only open or close by operating the slide/button.
