No, per Blackhawk Tech Support, the recoil mechanism wouldn’t function correctly without the plug, and as the unit is sealed with red threadlocker to prevent disassembly, Blackhawk Tech Support says disassembly would destroy the unit.
YES!! No loctite. You just need a good armorers wrench to remove the castle nut. Mil-spec carbine receiver extension (aka buffer tube) threads right on in place of the nub with the QD sling swivel. Easy peasy.
I’m talking first-hand, not assuming. I took a leap of faith since nobody on here seems to know for sure. Installed on my Mossberg Shockwave without an issue.
You’re welcome. lol
I just purchased this myself and attempted the same thing. After a call to the manufacturer, I was informed that they use Red Loctite to assemble those components. I used a liberal amount of heat from a heat gun (~1170F) applied to the part that contains the sling swivel. That was sufficient to breakdown the Loctite. Underneath the sling mount plug, you find a “cup” that retains the spring for the recoil system. I believe a standard buffer tube should fit, but your mileage may vary.
