What is the night vision tech on which this one is based? Could it be mounted in line with standard scope?

This is a digital night vision unit and works using a CMOS sensor and you cannot mount it with another daytime optic because it is already magnified.

How’s the magnification improved/clarified with it doubling in strength? The last model at 3X was very hard to see clearly unless sitting on something

Technically it isn't improved or clarified. It will be the same optics and technically will be slightly harder to steady because of the added magnification.
