These will work without the IR illuminator, provided there is enough ambient light (starlight, moonlight, etc.), however the range will typically be better when the IR illuminator is in use.

200 is really pushing it. On a totally clear night you should be able to make out shapes of big game like deer and large pigs. 100 yards is comfortable.
