Yes, the Bushnell Rimfire 3-9x40mm Rifle Scope can be used on an AR platform rifle. I would recommend pairing it with a 1-piece mount such as the Vortex Pro Extended Cantilever Mount (linked below).

I want to add butler flip covers to this .. which 2 will I need?

Bushnell does not state the outside diameter of the objective or eyepiece. I recommend using the scope cover sizing chart on the left side of the product page below to determine what size flip up caps are needed.

The Bushnell Rimfire 3-9x40mm Rifle Scope does not include scope rings and will be compatible with 1" scope rings.

I've always relied on irons and as a "newbie" to the optics world, would this still be usable if batteries died or would the reticle disappear?

The Bushnell Rimfire 3-9x40mm Rifle Scope uses an etched reticle, meaning if the illumination were to die, you will always be able to see the reticle.
