Distance varies on your target, lighting conditions, and the clarity you require. Under moonlight, this device is capable of roughly spotting a human standing up at 180 yards fully exposed. Realistically it cannot ID the person for weapons until about 100-50 yards. The owners manual states a "range" of 50-55M. Clarity can be improved to that of a Gen 3 if you have an IR light source, but this is basically self-defeating in many cases. This is a Gen 1 device so I would play it safe and expect 25 yard effective range and be happy if you get more. It is hard to convey clarity and what is workable for me may not be for you. The focus ring has a lot of slop and the objective ring is limited in adjustment. Consequentially you have a very narrow range for clarity and your adjust is critical for clarity. However, I have found that once you adjust it you are able to see things from 2 feet away to 100 yards away without having to readjust, which is nice.
The ELF-1 comes with a tripod mount screw at the bottom and a screw hole at the top which I think will mount a J arm. However, since this is different sized than the PVS14, I made my own NVD arm and mount setup. Supposedly there was an aimpoint mount made for this device over a decade ago but it cannot be found today. You will either have to improvise an existing mount or machine your own.
