Why does the item in question specify right handed? Do both magazines face the same direction? It doesn’t look like it.

There's No left or Right hand. the magazines will fit bullets foreword or backward...

Will it hold Springfield Armory XD 45 double stack magazines? Do both magazines face the same direction or does one have to be backwards?

Yes, that magazine should fit. Both would face the same direction as well.
