13" would be the best to ensure that the gas block is completely covered.

Not to try to overreach the answer from the guys at Faxon but I have an Aero Precision 12" Atlas S One hand guard on mine and it works just fine. However, I would have bought one in 13" if only they made one that long. There will be approx 2" of hand guard in front of the gas block and it would put your hand at the gas block if you hold the hand guard out near the end. If you do a lot of mag dumps, beware.
