Will this backpack go thru airport security when traveling?

It should, it was designed to be TSA approved. However, given that the rules can change at any time, you may want to double check with the TSA to make sure.

When you unzip the backpack, are both pieces armor protected?

The Guard Dog Security ProShield Smart Bulletproof Backpack only has armor on the back of the bag. So if unzip both sides will not have armor.

No, that's child abuse. The flat part that rests against your back contains the bulletproof insert. It can be worn normally or against your chest.
