Will this sight fit my S&W model 986?

Yes it will ifyou have a DX style front sight. You will want to measure the height of the sight as it does come in 3 heights.

Will this sight work on the S&W 686 revolver?

The HiViz S&W Illuminated Fiber Optic Front Revolver Sight is not compatible with a S&W model 686. We do carry the XS Sight Systems DXW Big Dot Sight, which is compatible with the 686, and can be found by using the link below:
