If I have an a2 front sight block, is it stupid to buy this or should I get a low profile gas block and then put on an optic?

It is not stupid as many people like their red dot to be in line with their front sight. If you do not want your front sight to be at all visible, then you either need to tall mount or replace the gas block with a low profile.
