50mm on Ruger american .308 needs med or high tally rings ?

You will need to use high height rings in order to allow for clearance of the 50mm objective lens. I would recommend the Talley Modern Sporting Scope Rings if you have a picatinny rail, or the Talley 1-piece Riflescope Mounts if you want a direct mount option. Both can be found linked below:

Does the scope take a battery and is it fire dot? It’s listed it’s not illuminated, but fire dot in the description

The Leupold VX-Freedom 4-12x50mm Rifle Scope does not feature an illuminated reticle. It uses the Leupold Duplex Reticle pattern.

Will this hold up to a 45-70

The Leupold VX-Freedom 4-12x50mm Rifle Scope will withstand the recoil of a 45-70. Just ensure you mount it properly to the rifle.

The description says “cds duplex” or “duplex” for reticle options on this scope. Is this scope CDS compatible? Do you get a custom dial from Leupold?

The scope ships with a standard MOA dial, you’ll need to sight in the rifle with that dial then go to Leupold’s website and answer some questions about your rifle, ammo and scope then they will make a custom CDS turret for your set up.

Does this scope come standard with the CDS Turret?

The Leupold VX-Freedom 4-12x50mm Rifle Scope is compatible with the CDS Turrets. Once you install the scope and sight it in you can go to Leupold's website to order your CDS turrets for the scope. You will fill out the information needed for your specific cartridge and Leupold will send you the CDS Turret. How to get the CDS Turret is explained in the video on the left side of the product page.
