You may have run into the problem of the batteries leaking and corroding the inside of the flashlight. Good luck getting the swollen batteries out once you get the end cap off. (Righty tighty, lefty loosy as veiwed from the end cap.)

The batteries may have leaked and corroded the aluminum threads together. I have had that problem with a few Maglites and wound up destroying them by removing the end-cap. It can be done, good luck.
