Using a backup iron sight would require you to press your head (uncomfortably) further forward to use the optic. This also has an etched reticle, so if the battery were to die, you can still see your reticle. I would recommend using offset iron sights if you are looking for a backup option.

It's very rare that an intermediate cartridge like 7.62x39 will ruin any optic. It's usually only slide riding pistol red dots and magnum bolt actions that you see any significant issues. Without any experience with this optic, I can assure you that this will work, and if not the warranty will cover a mild case like yours.
