What does the HG stand for and what drives the big price difference between these and the Monarch 5? Both are 8 x 42.

These have Nikon's "No Fault Policy" and have a "LIFETIME REPAIR/REPLACEMENT: Excludes lost or stolen products and intentionally caused damage, and also excludes Nikon Rangefinders, Reflex Sights, Red Dot Sights, StabilEyes Binoculars & Specialty Optics"

Will the Field optics research tripod adapter work with these binoculars?

Yes, that adapter should work as the binocular has a 1/4x20 female thread in the center column
