Generally speaking, AR barrels are measured by Overall Length. The rear portion that seats into the receiver is generally 0.99" +/-, say 1". Therefore, a 7.5" barrel will measure from the FRONT of the barrel seat to the END of the threaded muzzle and be 6.5" long.
