How long will the light last before the batteries fade out.

At 70mw 2 aaa batteries should last 20 hours according to the box description.

what is the effective illumination range for this product?

That will be dependent on the night vision unit you are using and the conditions of the night. Sightmark has stated they used the illuminator out to 200 yards or better.
