They can be operated independently.

Both buttons on my remote do the same thing no matter what. That's operate the last thing that was on. So if I turn the laser on then turn it off with the remote, the remote will operate the laser. If I turn that off at the body and turn on the light at the body, the remote will operate the light. If I use the buttons on the body to turn both the light and the laser on, both buttons on the remote turn the entire system on/off. I hope that clears things up a bit.
