What are the dimensions on this (specifically length of the wide portion)? how much does it "shorten" the buffer tube?

Spikes Tactical does not offer specific dimensions for their spacer but state it will shorten the distance the bolt travels to the amount that it actually needs to travel.

Yes. The Spikes Tactical 9mm Buffer Spacer will limit the travel of your 9mm bolt, helps eliminate the chance of breaking bolt catches, and makes for a much smoother shooting gun.

so if your ar9 bolt carrier has a buffer built into do you still use a standard AR buffer and Spring +and this product?

The Spikes Tactical 9mm Buffer Spacer was designed for someone who already owns a 9mm buffer like the one offered by RRA or Colt and doesn’t want to replace it with another expensive custom buffer. It limits the travel of your 9mm bolt, helps eliminate the chance of breaking bolt catches, and makes for a much smoother shooting gun.
