What is the difference between first focal plane and second focal plane?

Manufacturer Answer
A
Answered by Vortex, Manufacturer from WI, United States, on January 22, 2025

First focal-plane reticles will scale with magnification, keeping your subtensions accurate to size at any magnification. Second focal-plane reticles will require the shooter to be on the denoted magnification for subtension accuracy, or, use a mathematical equation to understand the subtension value change with magnification change!

This for a .308? With ballistics?

A
Answered by Bob from Texas, member, from AS, United States, on December 06, 2024

It's different per rifle. The barrel length, twist rate, bullet design, bullet weight, powder type, amount of powder, etc. No scope is ever for one cartridge unless you get into specialized military scopes - they use the exact same ammo per weapon system. You can learn the ballistics of any scope with any ammo. It just takes a little testing. On some of their models, Leupold will send you a (CDS) custom dial once you figure out your ballistics.
