First focal-plane reticles will scale with magnification, keeping your subtensions accurate to size at any magnification. Second focal-plane reticles will require the shooter to be on the denoted magnification for subtension accuracy, or, use a mathematical equation to understand the subtension value change with magnification change!

FFP = reticle size increases as magnification increases. SFP = reticle size is fixed regardless of magnification.
