Larger number shot is actually smaller. 6 shot works good for squirrels and rabbits, 7 1/2 and 8 shot for birds. Really more about personal preference. The smaller shot sizes will give you more pellets per round. Larger shot hits harder.

I like a size 6 for medium size to smaller birds because the pellets generally blast completely through the bird whereas the 7.5s tend to stay in the bird. You don't want pellets in what you're going to eat.
