Winchester has been making shotgun ammo since 1886. Their first lineup included 10 gauge, 12 gauge, 14 gauge (now obsolete), 16 gauge, and 20 gauge. Even though they no longer make 14 gauge shotshells (nobody does), they have added 28 gauge and .410 bore (sometimes known as 36 gauge) for a full selection of popular modern shotgun shells. They make shotgun ammo for everything from small shot sizes for target shooting like sporting clays, game loads, waterfowl loads, turkey loads, up to buckshot and sabot or rifled slugs.

What kind of ammo does a 12-gauge shotgun use?

Shotgun Ammo has more variety than any other kind of ammunition. Shotgun shells are either loaded with pellets called "shot", or single projectiles called "slugs". Unlike handgun or rifle ammunition, shotguns use a gauge system instead of calibers. This is a pretty complicated subject that we couldn't hope to cover here, so head on over to learn more in our Shotgun Ammo Guides. You'll find out about shot size, shot weight, shell length,

What 12-gauge ammo is best for home defense?

This is a tricky subject, and there are a lot of opinions out there that make some valid points. Here are the highlights:

Buckshot is often used due to the large shot size, but it can over-penetrate and pass through walls, potentially striking unintended targets. The same goes for sabot or rifled slugs, except the chance of overpenetration can be even higher. There are smaller sizes of buckshot, like #4, that some feel reduces this risk.

Small shot sizes like a light target load are never recommended, as they just don't have any real stopping power to mitigate a threat. However, some people will use a heavier pheasant or turkey load to reduce the risk of overpenetration while sacrificing some of the power.

What is the difference between shotgun shells and shotshells?

Even though the terms are pretty much used interchangeably, there is a difference. "Shotgun shells" applies to all types of shotgun ammo, as the projectiles are contained in a plastic hull, often called a shell. "Shotshells" specifically refer to those containing lead or steel shot, a bunch of small pellets loaded into the same shell. By this definition, a sabot or rifled slug would not be a shotshell, since they contain only a single projectile instead of pellets of shot, but they would be considered shotgun shells. Again, don't worry about these finer points, people use "shotshells" and "shotgun shells" interchangeably all the time, and everyone will understand that you're referring to shotgun ammo.
