If you're reloading Ammo, having a supply of brass tumbler media on hand is a must. It's essential for brass cleaning to restore your shells to a near-new shine.
The three most common brass tumbler media are corn cob, walnut hull (aka walnut shell, walnut media), and stainless steel pins. The different brass cleaning media may be treated or untreated and can be used in combination with certain liquids for optimized results.
All of the big names in reloading offer brass tumbler media, including:
Walnut hull or corn cob media don't have a definitive life cycle. Some reloaders will wait until the media takes about twice as long to tumble, while others will throw it out after each batch. A common practice is to "recharge" it by replacing a third to half of the existing media with fresh stuff to lengthen the lifespan. The clearest sign that you need to replace your tumbling media is when it's just not polishing at all anymore. This means all of the rough edges have been rounded off and are no longer effective.
Stainless steel tumbling media will last indefinitely, but can only be used in a rotary tumbler and never in a vibratory tumbler.
