Dus10's Review of AGM Global Vision F14-3APW Fusion Night Vision and Thermal Tactical Monocular

I assume if you’re reading this you already know the basics of this device, in short a 3rd Gen White Phosphor NVG (starlight) monocular combined with a monochromatic Infrared thermal optic that can be used independently or together in a fusion mode. As a NOD it’s a pretty stellar all in one device. Meant to be helmet mounted but can be hand operated by simply attaching the battery case to the top of the unit. As a NVG device only, the 3rd gen white Phos tube is really good. Great clarity. Manual gain control and great light gathering. Even has a small built in IR illuminator for close up work. The device has to two independent controls: one for the NV and one for the thermal. If you turn them both on it fuses the two but makes the thermal more of an outline instead or a heat spectrum. You can select white hot, black hot, or orange hot color modes in both full spectrum thermal or the hybrid outline. And it has a breathing mode in the fusion which breathes the thermal outline on and off and you can set the speed of the breaths. It’s a useful setting in an urban environment with lots of heat signatures as the thermal outline can get a little busy and distracting. So if you set the breaths to slow you can look around in NVG and every few seconds a thermal outline of heat signatures will slowly appear and then fade away. In some situations it’s better to use one or the other. The thermal is pretty darn good, even though it’s monochromatic and not full color spectrum it does a good job. White hot is what I prefer and it does a stellar job with a tremendous range for its size. I can see flying birds out past 800m and I spotted a plane lane landing over a few miles away. Overall It’s a pretty trick unit. It comes with a very nice hard case and even comes with a very nice flip up helmet mount that turns the device off as soon as you flip it up. I have it mounted over my left eye and my rifle has a Steiner CQC thermal red dot and the combination of looking thru my rifle site with my right eye and the AGM-F14 in my left is perfect. Gives me stereoscopic thermal while using the site on my rifle instead of a LAM.
Pros:
  • Latest tech. Great 3rd gen tube, great thermal resolution. Compact package. Seems robust and durable.
Cons:
  • No weapons mount options
Best Used for:
  • Helmet attached whatever purpose you need for seeing darkness.
