Mclean's Review of AGM Global Vision Rattler TC19-256 1x19mm 30mm Tube Thermal Imaging Clip-On

I've gotten to use the tc19-256 on several cool and wet nights. You do not get a lot of terrain detail like IR night vision, but animals really stand out. Inside of 30 yards you can see detail like parts in the fur, from about 30 to 60 yards you can see the shape and some features of the animal. (depending on the animal anyway) From 60 to 200ish yards you are dealing with the profile of an animal. A rabbit at 100 yards may just look like a little blob until it hops or puts up its ears, but it's a little blob that stands out like a bright beacon.
It has held 100 yard zero on a 300BLK after being removed and replaced repeatedly. So far it has held up to being fired atop a 300blk and 6.5gendel without freezing or rebooting. If I staple a hot-hands packet to the target board it makes a nice clean square target at 100 yards. Groups have been about the same size as shooting without the unit clipped on. (about 1.5 MOA on that gun) It's very easy to put bullets into a hot-hands at 100, I've been very impressed with the accuracy while using the tc19-256. Depending on the sun, sighting in without a hot-hands might be difficult. I also purchased the optional eye piece to use it as a stand alone scope. Often we take it with us and use it like a spotter. I can spot critters before the dog can, and I will watch her work her way up to them.

Although it appeared online that there is no picatinny mount included, the mount was in fact included along with a nice case and large scope bell mount.

Nitpicks:
When used as a stand alone scope, the zoom goes up 20x. That seems kind of ridiculous considering the small sensor resolution and the fact that it forces you to scroll through the zoom options in order to get back to 2.5x. I'd just assume they left 20x out.
Also this is a clip on and I would think AR15 style rifles are a target market for these... The picatinny mount should be about 0.125" lower to better line up with standard AR height optic mounts. So far it has not been an issue, it has functioned fine. But it is taller than every optic I have mounted it in front of, it seems like more thought should have gone into that. The included mount looks to be the same height as the mounts for the stand alone rattlers. Some shorter mount options would be nice.

I would say this was a good purchase. You can see animals, and you can put bullets where they are. However, It does not make good night vision, there is not enough detail to use it for looking at terrain and whatnot. Once in a while when the conditions are right you can see an amazing amount of the world around you, but after a cloudy day and a little drizzle when you are surrounded by vegetation, then it is just a critter spotter.
Pros:
  • Spotting animals
  • Did include mounts
Cons:
  • Not much terrain detail
Best Used for:
  • Night time inside of 200 yards
