Legacy Reviewer's Review of Aimpoint CompM4 Red Dot Sight w/ QRP2 Mount

From the moment I felt this sight in my hand, I knew I purchased a solid sight. It just oozes quality from the moment you first see it, to when you hold it in your hand; and you will know it can take anything you throw at it. The glass is crystal clear right up to the edges. Contrast is fantastic, and with all the settings for day or night use, the dot was as sharp as one can be, assuming you set it properly. If you set it too bright, it looks like a star; but when you have it set for your eyes, the dot is crisp and sharp.

One of the changes Aimpoint has made with this sight is it has done away with the expensive chromium and/or lithium batteries. Now all you need is one AA battery, and you are good to go for an amazing eight years according to Aimpoint. This particular sight comes in two versions. One has the battery compartment set up high and is called the Comp4. THe other has the compartment down low and is called the 4s.

I chose the 4s because I like to be able to see as much as I can whether using a red dot sight or a scope. The unit came with a battery, and I got a little upset when I looked through the ocular and there was no red dot. It turned out the battery that came with it was dead. So before you send one back, try replacing the battery first. By the way, there is no on/off switch with this sight. It is mind boggling to think one battery lasts eight years. I doubt I will wait that long before I replace it, but it is a wonderful characteristic of this sight.

The unit came with a quick release mount attached to it; the theory being you will not lose your zero when you remove it and place it back on. I can tell you I tried unmounting and remounting five times, and it never lost it's zero. Another nice feature that comes with the sight is the ARD filter. Most companies charge a lot of money for the filter, but Aimpoint includes it with the sight. They also included bikini lens caps, but I am not into cords holding them on my sight and getting tangled when I need to defend myself, .so I sprung and purchased flip-up covers for both the objective and ocular lens. Once installed, your lens are protected from unnecessary dust or scratching
.
Establishing your zero is about as easy at it can be. It took me just three shots. The sharpness and clarity of the lens is very impressive, and this sight enables you to find your target and shoot very quickly with both eyes open. I have to admit I was using my shooting eye when I first started using the sight. Old habits are hard to get rid of. but I soon found myself so comfortable with it, and my confidence increased with every shot fired; I was able to go with both eyes open. I found my eye strain was significantly reduced using both eyes.

There are limitations with this type of sight as with every sight or scope made. Red Dot sights are terrific for close quarters or short range up to 80-100 yards. Beyond that the dot becomes so small it is very difficult to see it. The unit also came with an ARD which is an anti-reflective device. When the sun hits the Objective lens it can cause a shimmer of light just as a mirror does. The last thing you want is to have your position given away. Most companies charge a lot of money for the filter, but Aimpoint includes it with the sight. If you are purely a target shooter, this is an awesome alternative to an expensive, heavy, and large scope. If you prefer longer ranges like I do, you will need a scope.

This was my first red dot scope and I love it. Unfortunately, it didn't meet my standard for the set-up I wanted on my new LWRC M6A2 SPR. I needed longer range. So, this sight is now comfortable on my Remington Versa Max Tactical. And I have no doubt it will withstand all the punishment a shotgun will give it. My M6 has a Swarovski Z6i 3.5-14X 44mm scope, and I needed a sight for closer range; so I purchased the Aimpoint T-1 and mounted it between my scope mount on an an offset mount. The T-1 weighs all of 3 ounces. Now I have my red dot sight for short range, and my scope for those longer shots; and I never have swap out one sight for another. I had hoped the Comp4s would work, but it was just a bit large for my configuration. For me it is the perfect set-up. I couldn't ask for anything more. I know once you see this sight n person and peer threw the lens, you've been smitten. Don't worry, you are going to enjoy this sight for many many years!

The Comp4 or 4s is Aimpoint's newest edition to its family of red dot sights. In my opinion, it is the finest red dot, hands down. It is compatible with night vision scopes, and works very well with 3x and 4x scopes to increase your magnification. What more could you possibly ask from a red dot sight?

There are a lot of people who think Aimpoint's sights are too expensive. Tell you what guys and gals. Go buy a cheaper red dot, then buy a mount for it and lens caps and the antireflective device (ARD); and watch out for the total cost. And don't forget those expensive batteries while you are at it. That is why it is easy for me to say, you will not find a better red dot sight for the money anywhere.

This Aimpoint sight is worth every penny. They didn't skimp by including a cheap mount. They provide you with a rock solid mount with quick release. Just flip open to levers and poof, it is off your rifle. Every aspect of this sight cost a fortune in R&D, and they provide you with the highest quality sights in the world. When you get this home and look it over, you will know immediately that every word of praise I have given this sight is well deserved. And when it comes to firearms, safety, and being confident you have the very best; You have it all with the Aimpoint Comp4(s)!
Pros: Great Clarity and long battery life
Cons: One of the larger sights in this field
